‘When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.’
(Jeremiah 15:16, NLT)
I admit it.
I am a nerd.
I love a notebook, I love an organiser, a diary, pens, paper. Any organisational tool – I LOVE it!
When I became a Christian, time with God was not a stretch for me. YES! An opportunity to buy a Bible with its clean pages and crisp edges. An opportunity to buy a new notebook as my prayer journal – I loved it all.
But as my walk with God progressed, the notebook and the paper and the Bibles lost their allure.
The familiarity of it all became a little, well, familiar.
It was then that I found this verse in Jeremiah.
This was no ordinary verse in the Bible. It used the words DEVOUR and DELIGHT and JOY.
Somewhere along the way I had lost my ‘devour’, my ‘delight’, my ‘joy’.
My message today is pretty simple: don’t shortchange your relationship with God.
God is a daily God who wants all of us, not just a little slot on a Sunday morning where we dust off our Bibles and bring them to church to ‘look the part’.
This verse speaks to me of passion and fun and commitment. Isn’t that what you want from all of your relationships?
This verse tells me that God doesn’t want us to just trudge through our time in His word, He wants us to LOVE it, to seek it, to pursue it and know it.
Friends, I urge you – find whatever setting you can to make time in God’s word. A time where you can use the words ‘devour’, ‘delight’ and ‘joy’. It will look different for all of us because WE are all different.
But make sure that you find it – it will be the best investment you could ever make.
