An 8-day devotional
Worship in Everyday Life
So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life – and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.
(Romans 12:1 MSG)
I love this scripture. Especially in The Message interpretation of the Bible.
The reason I love it is because it takes worship – something that can seem to some to be ethereal and far off – and brings it right down to ground.
Consider this. If you were really into a certain music band, the likelihood is that you would have their music playing around you most of the day, wherever you had opportunity. Whilst you were getting ready for work, brushing your teeth, eating your breakfast…and so on throughout the day.
Now, we all know that we can misplace our worship and elevate things or people far above where they should be in our lives. Let’s say you were so into this band that you followed them across the country listening to their concerts, buying all their music, their merchandise, researching about their lives. This could be considered making them an idol in your life. Idolising them.
Now, let’s flip this around.
How quick are we to involve and immerse ourselves in worship of God this way?
Do we think of Him, worship Him in song, pray to Him, read His word and spend time with Him with the same ferocity we would the band that we are so into?
If not, there is no condemnation here. I’m just getting us to think about how much more we can offer God of our days by way of worship!
When you’re getting ready for work, have worship music playing. When you’re brushing your teeth, pray to Him (in your head perhaps!). When you’re eating your breakfast, break open the word of God and absorb some truth into your day.
Simple things in our day-to-day life can become profound acts of worship when we turn the focus from the activity to God.
As the scripture of today says, make it an offering to God. A sweet aroma that rises to His throne and pleases His heart.
If you struggle to think of what to pray or what to read, do exactly as the scripture says – embrace what He has done for you!
Thank Him for the way that He has saved you, raised you, delivered you and set your feet on solid ground. Praising God for who He is and what He has done brings Him into your remembrance and elevates Him to the right position He deserves in your life.
Worship Him all day friends. He is so worthy.
Father,
Thank you for the borrowed breath in our lungs and the opportunities we have to use that breath to honour you. Lord, may we see every moment as a chance to lift up your name and give you praise. Not just for what you have done for us, but for who You are!
May we see and grasp even the smallest corner of our days to sing to you, read about you, talk to you and connect with you. You are as close to us as the very air in our lungs. I pray that we always remember that.
In Jesus name,
Amen.
