Authentic Worship – Day 4

An 8-day devotional

Worship Through Song

Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy.

(Psalm 100:1-2 NLT)

There are so many beautiful songs of worship in our world today – we are not without accompaniment when we want to sing to the Lord!

Singing and playing music to God is one of the most beautiful ways that we can honour Him. Music almost bypasses the mind and allows us to express our love and heartfelt joy to the Lord without distraction.

As well as being a beautiful offering to our King, it is also powerful.

Historically, the worshippers would lead the way in battle as a sign that the battle was the Lord’s, not man’s. We war in a similar way, only in the spiritual, when we sing in modern day. As we lift up a shout of praise to the Lord, we are declaring His sovereignty and authority over the kingdom of darkness and laying the groundwork for victory.

Music and singing to God can sometimes be neglected in our day-to-day worship and time with the Lord. We may more naturally gravitate towards the Word or prayer, but forget that lifting up a song to Him also adds so much to our time with Him.

Some of the more powerful times I’ve had with the Lord have involved the Word and prayer, absolutely. But the addition of song and thanksgiving through music has been just what was needed to break through in my circumstances.

Think of Paul and Silas in prison…

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.

(Acts 16:25-26 NIV)

Singing praise to God whilst bound proved miraculous for Paul and Silas! They were immediately freed from their bondage. The whole sequence of events even resulted in the salvation of the prison guard and his entire household.

If we read accounts like this in scripture and either dismiss them as ‘nice stories’ or discount them as ‘nice for them’, we miss the power and potential of what worship can do in our present day and in our current circumstances.

Worship is powerful.

Singing to the Lord carries great power. Never neglect it. Never diminish its potential.

Father,

It is such a joy to sing to you. You have done so much for every single one of us, you deserve nothing less than our full attention and our wholehearted praise.

If you never did another thing for us, the cross would be enough. May we lift up praise and song to you every day of our lives. You are so, so worthy.

In Jesus name,

Amen.
